First let me begin by saying that I know the author, Robert Hudson. He was my college band director my first two years in college and he also was the leader of a recorder ensemble I played in and he gave me and a friend lessons in conducting. This was a long time ago but he had a profound impact on my development as a musician and as a person and I still think about how much I learned from him.Having said that, I need to state further that during that time I had no idea of any of Robert's background other than that he was from the deep South.
So reading this book has been a shock to me, to learn of Robert's childhood and rise from the depths of poverty to overcome his early life and to become an excellent musician, a fine teacher and a wonderful human being. It does explain a lot about why Robert was who he was when I knew him in college -- he was a warm friendly teacher and could empathize with people from all backgrounds and he worked hard to help us bring out the best in who we were. I don't recall ever hearing him say anything negative about anybody, and after reading as far as I have into this book I can understand why. He is among the least judgemental people I have ever met and now that I know that he grew up under the oppression of the judgements of others about his family situation I can see why he would have worked hard not to judge others.
I haven't finished the book because I know Robert and as I read what he went through, all his experiences of childhood, I am appalled and amazed that anybody would have to live through that. If I had never known Robert I would still find the story of his childhood and rise to adulthood compelling and amazing and I would still feel sad that it happened to anybody. But having known Robert for those years while I was in college, I find I can only read a few pages at a time before I have to put the book down and clear my head.
It is a wonderful telling of a childhood, filtered through an adult's eyes looking back, and this is a greatly inspiring story of how much people can overcome if they are determined enough to leave the past behind and make a better life for themselves. That it has lead to a wonderfully productive life in music and education is a gift to those of us who know Robert and have shared music-making with him.
The style of writing is very relaxed and conversational and is easy to read. Robert shares his experiences with us but never is he asking for our pity. He is simply trying to let us glimpse his life in a matter-of-fact way that nevertheless lets his underlying warmth and humanity show through.
This is a great book and would make a wonderful movie!

This is a wonderful book its like reading the adventures of Tom Sawyer yet unlike Mark Twains book this book is true. And it was especially interesting to me being that I am related to Robert and have been to some of these places and as a kid I spent the night in the house that use to be the porky pig Bar BQ. and was always curious about the building across the road.
Robert is a good musician and author and I cant wait for his next book. Also I hope his brother Elwyn who has been writing all his life about the adventures of being on the Birmingham police force will someday publish some of his stories. For I know he has many written down. They seem to both be gifted writers.
Putting many of the recollections in "Honky-Tonk Row" had to be painful for Robert Hudson, but he's done an excellent job of describing what it was like to grow up in the insecurity of white poverty in the rural South of the 1940s and '50s. Once he'd discovered the importance of music in his life, a purpose becomes clear, although improved economic circumstances certainly don't provide him with an easy life. Along the way, through adolescence, college, early adulthood, teaching jobs made difficult by his sensitivity to racial injustice, and marriages, the reader can gain good, honest, insight by observing how Robert's life experiences inevitably bring him to choose principle over compromise.
I, too, know Robert, but met him only a few years ago, well after his relocation to western North Carolina. Since "Honky-Tonk Row" stops before that seemingly smoother part of his life, a sequel covering those later years would be welcome.
